The Punjab Pollution Control Board has imposed penalties on the Kapurthala Municipal Corporation and several colonies for polluting the sacred Kali Bein with sewage water.

The penalties are part of the board’s efforts to protect the pristine glory of the rivulet, which holds historical and religious significance as it was associated with the early life of Guru Nanak Dev.

Renowned environmentalist and Member of Rajya Sabha Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has been advocating for the restoration of the Kali Bein’s religious glory. In a meeting held at the District Administration Complex on Friday, Seechewal expressed his concerns to Deputy Commissioner Capt Karnail Singh regarding the failure of the district administration to contain the pollution caused by certain colonies falling within the Kapurthala Municipal Corporation.

During the meeting, an official from the Pollution Control Board informed Seechewal that penalties have been imposed on the Kapurthala Municipal Corporation as well as on selected colonies and villages for their role in polluting the rivulet. However, the details of these penalties were not disclosed to the media.

The DC stated that the sewage treatment plant at Bhulana village, which has been a significant contributor to the pollution of the rivulet, is set to become operational by June 30. This development marks a substantial milestone, as almost 90 per cent of the work has been completed.

Addressing the media after the meeting, Seechewal announced his intention to request a meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to discuss the progress of the holy Bein project. He expressed optimism that with the completion of the sewage treatment plant at Bhulana village, the remaining pollution issues caused by the three other villages would be resolved.

Furthermore, he believed that this continuous 23-year effort, known as Kar Sewa, would yield positive results, with clean water flowing in the rivulet once again. Seechewal expressed confidence that the restored holy Bein would attract religious tourism from around the world.

In another development, the MP directed officials to address the delays in the Smart City projects, emphasising their potential to serve as a hub for religious tourism.

The Deputy Commissioner assured Seechewal that he would personally oversee the progress of the holy Bein project.
