Poll panel confiscates ‘gifts’ with Akali candidate’s photos

The Election Commission on Sunday confiscated 10 rickshaws in Faridkot which were carrying items like dustbins, notebooks and clocks and had photographs of Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Deep Malhotra embossed on the items.

The Election Commission on Sunday confiscated 10 rickshaws in Faridkot which were carrying items like dustbins, notebooks and clocks and had photographs of Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Deep Malhotra embossed on the items.

Election observers Harsimrat Singh and Rajinder Singh who reached the spot, said that such ‘gifts’ can be used to lure voters and a notice has been served to the candidate.

Meanwhile,Sukhinder Singh Brar,a close associate of Congress candidate Avtar Singh Brar, alleged that the party had prior information about these ‘gifts’. “We had information that the municipal council on insistence of the SAD (B) was distributing free dustbins in areas, which have mostly poor people. We were able to nab the rickshaws and the presence of the photographs of the Akali candidate proves our point. The EC should take strict action,” Brar said.

“We also had information that the water, sewerage ,power and phone bills of some poor people were being paid by the Akali leaders, but we do not have concrete evidence. They are using every possible means to lure the voters,” he alleged.

Queried,Avtar Sigh Khosa, the spokesperson for Malhotra, rubbished the allegations. “Instead of concentrating on the elections, the Congress is picking up petty issues. First, they raked up the issue of Malhotra having two voter ID cards and now this. We are looking into the matter and checking as to who is behind this gift business.”
