Police on Monday arrested a thief who had stolen some cameras from a Sector-16 shop in the city last week.
According to police,Rakesh Verma – a Shimla resident who has been living in Manimajra – had stolen some cameras from the shop and later set it on fire so that nobody would suspect it as a theft case.
Police also recovered four cameras from Verma,including a video camera valued at over Rs 10 lakh. The accused had stolen cameras worth nearly Rs 20 lakh.
Verma had done a proper recce of the shop before stealing the cameras. One of the cameras has not yet been recovered since the accused hid it at his house in Himachal Pradesh,police said.
The assistant commissioner of police,Panchkula,Virendar Singh,said the police tracked the mobile phone of the accused,which was found in the same area where the theft had taken place.
The accused set the shop on fire,which damaged a camera that was not in working condition. He had been noting down the timings of the shop and broke in at the wee hours last week, the ACP said.
The arrest was made during a raid by a team – comprising station house officer Sector 14 police station,Lalit Kumar; assistant sub-inspector Sat Pal and sub-inspector Raj Kumar – at the house of the accused.
Police said the accused wanted to sell the stolen goods in Delhi and had been shooting marriage functions of people with the cameras,adidng that the possibility of other peoples involvement in the theft was being investigated.
