There was widespread celebration at Cheema Khurd village in Tarn Taran district, the home of Mandeep Kaur who has won a gold in the 400X4 relay race in Commonwealth Games. Her parents Jasbir Singh and Sarabjit Kaur said Mandeep’s success had made them proud.

“We had to lease our ancestral agricultural land to arrange money for her training. We are proud that she brought laurels to the country,” said an emotional Sarabjit, adding that her daughter had won more than 150 medals at state and national-level athletics.

“She had been noticed as a runner when she was in Class VII. We were reluctant in the beginning as girls hardly venture out in our rural families. But we decided that we should not allow her talent to go waste,” said Sarabjit.

Mandeep’s coach Baljinder Singh said she had the stamina and grit essential in an athlete. “I was her coach when she was a student of high school at Kairon village. We were impressed by her focus and stamina,” said Baljinder, adding that Mandeep was an Olympic material.

Mandeep belongs to a poor farming family and has two brothers. “She needs support. She has been sustaining with much difficulties and the government should support her. She will shine in the next international events, too. The relay race and 100 metres are her forte,” said the coach.
