Overflowing Ghaggar,Tangri inundate some villages along Punjab-Haryana border

Water from the overflowing Ghaggar and Tangri flooded a few villages along the Punjab-Haryana border.

Water from the overflowing Ghaggar and Tangri flooded a few villages along the Punjab-Haryana border on Friday morning. Water had, however, receded by the evening.

Even as the two rivers continued to flow around the danger mark, they have much tension to people living along them. While the Ghaggar was around the danger level and its water level had started receding, the Tangri river along the Punjab-Haryana border was flowing above the danger mark.

While no breach was caused in these rivers, water overflowed from these inundated rivers into low-lying areas of both Punjab and Haryana around them. Sources said that some villages near Doodhan Sadhan and Dharamheri in Punjab were flooded this morning, but waters started receding in them by the evening. Drainage officials said while rivers were flowing near the danger mark, there was nothing to worry now as fresh waters had started receding in the rivers after the rains stopped in the hills.

While the Ghaggar was flowing below the danger level in Sarala and Bhankarpur where it enters Punjab territory,it was flowing at 46.7 feet at Khanouri, against the danger level of 49 feet, said drainage officials.

The cause of worry here was that the water level was still rising here,as it happens to be the tail end of the river. Waters in the Tangri river at Dharamheri were flowing at 14 feet, one feet above the danger mark of 13 feet. It had also inundated fields in the area due to overflow of waters from the flooded river. Even though waters have started receding,it is feared that the areas around Khanouri may be flooded as the flowing waters are reaching Khanouri by tonight or tomorrow morning. The authorities have asked the villagers to be ready and make alternate arrangements.
