The Night Food Street is likely to be soon reopened for city residents. While the renovation of the Food Street is complete, the work for construction of the parking lot is pending. The kiosks are then likely to be allotted.
The Night Food Street near PGI was closed down a few months back. For almost a year prior to this, the condition of the Food Street had been deteriorating. The conditions were unhygienic and the kiosk owners had started defaulting on payment of rent. Finally in May this year the authorities decided to close down the food street.
The Food Street was functioning well for the first year after it was started. Later the policy of allotment was changed and the kiosks were auctioned off, instead of being allotted through a draw of lots. This earned the Municipal Corporation a high revenue. But soon the kiosk owners realized that they were running into losses. The contractors stopped paying the rent and some gave up the kiosks. Incidents of brawls were also witnessed.
After directions from the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the MC has now framed a new policy for the Food Street. It was decided that instead of eight kiosks, four would be allotted by combining two kiosks. It was further decided that the allotment would be through a draw of lots.
An official of the MC said that the renovation of the Night Food Street was complete. Work is pending for construction of the parking lot. With the rains over, this will be undertaken in the next few days. The food street will then be ready for allotment.
