The Punjab Police’s Anti-Narcotic-cum-Special Operation Cell of Ropar Range arrested a Nigerian national with a significant haul of high-end narcotics and cash Friday.
DIG Harcharan Singh Bhullar said the accused, identified as Augustine Okwudili, was caught with 255 grams of cocaine, 10.25 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) pills and Rs 2 lakh in cash, suspected to be drug proceeds.
“Both cocaine and MDMA were being sold at premium prices in high-profile circles and private parties across Mohali, Chandigarh, and Panchkula,” the DIG sad, adding that the drugs are believed to have been smuggled through cross-border parcel routes.
Acting on specific intelligence, Inspector Sukhwinder Singh, in-charge of the Range Anti-Narcotics Cell, and his team laid a trap near Preet Karyana Store, GTB Colony, Kharar on September 12 at 11.45 am. An informer had tipped off the police that the accused was actively supplying cocaine to regular customers in the area.
A raid followed, leading to his arrest. An FIR dated September 13, under Sections 21/61/85 of the NDPS Act, was registered at the Kharar city police station.
Produced before the Kharar court on September 13, the accused was remanded to two days of police custody. During interrogation, he revealed that more contraband was hidden in his scooter. A search led to the recovery of 10.25 grams of MDMA (Ecstasy) pills.
Investigators believe the seized narcotics were intended for elite parties and private gatherings.“Efforts are underway to identify the source of the supply and to track the distribution network to nab all accomplices,” Inspector Sukhwinder Singh said.
