‘Namaste Auntyji’ gang busted,two arrested

As the women would get busy answering their queries,they would snatch their gold chains and run away.

Police on Tuesday busted a gang of snatchers who had adopted a novel modus operandi. They would greet the old women with “Namaste Auntyji” and trick them by being sweet with them,and start asking questions. As the women would get busy answering their queries,they would snatch their gold chains and run away.

Police arrested two people while three others,including the jeweller to whom the gold items were sold,were detained for questioning. Police also recovered a Splendor motorcycle that was used in the crime.

Known as ‘Namaste Aunty’ gang,they would strike after proper planning. They would recce the area to keep tabs on women. Once they found an opportunity,they would lay the trap and run away with their gold jewellery. “The gang members would address the women as Namaste Auntyji. Then finding an opportunity,they would steal their gold items,” said a police official. “On seeing the women walk alone on the road,they would approach them on the pretext of asking some queries. Then they would clap hands to alert their members,and snatch the gold ornaments from the women and run away.”

Those arrested have been identified as Daljeet alias Banka and Deepak Kumar alias Deepu while the Manimajra jeweller has been identified as Ashish Kumar. One of the other two detained for questioning has been identified as Jitendar Kumar alias Rocky while the identity of the fifth person was being ascertained.

As per the police,while Deepak has been living in Chandimandir area of the city,Daljeet lived in Sector 12 A in the city. The duo confessed to have carried out nine snatchings in March. Most of these snatchings took place in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of Sector 5 police station.

Commissioner (Panchkula-Ambala range) Rajbir Deswal said,“We are questioning the jeweller who bought the stolen items from the snatchers. Some nine cases of snatching reported in March have been solved after the arrests. The snatchers have been mostly attacking elderly women.”
