Municipal Corporation approves project to redesign Mohali’s busiest shopping stretch — Phase 11 to 6

Welcoming the move, Councillors said it would boost both the city’s aesthetics and trade.

However, the House rejected the proposal to introduce mechanical cleaning for the city’s internal roads (C roads) by a majority vote, despite Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors pressing for its implementation and recording their dissent.

Currently, only ‘A’ and ‘B’ category roads are cleaned mechanically, a system that has “failed to satisfy” both officials and councillors.

A sharp exchange between former deputy mayor Manjit Singh Sethi and incumbent Deputy Mayor Kuljit Singh Bedi turned the meeting tense briefly, but order was restored after senior members intervened.

SWM estimate revised to Rs 29.93 crore

The House also cleared a revised estimate for solid waste management (SWM) in the city after collecting door-to-door garbage professionally. An earlier estimate of Rs 20.79 crore, which was revised to Rs 22.13 crore last month, was further enhanced to Rs 30.57 crore, but the chief engineer finally approved Rs 29.93 crore after a scrutiny.

The new plan includes one mini-tipper truck with a driver and helper for every 700 households, e-rickshaws for patrolling and a mobile-app barcode system for monitoring garbage collection.

Delegation to Indore, Varanasi proposed

Councillor Sarabjit Singh Samana suggested sending a delegation to Indore and Varanasi to study their advanced cleaning system and replicate best of their practices in Mohali.

• The House unanimously approved several development projects, including a Rs 2.5-crore boundary wall on the MC land in Sector 74.
• Beautification of three roads adjoining the city’s main shopping street
• Development of a 7.5-km arterial road between Phase 11 and Phase 6 under world-class urban design
• Shopping street makeover to world-class standards
