More than 500 watch PGI doctors’ first live performance in interventional cardiology

FOR the first time in the history of the Post-Graduate Institute

of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER),doctors from the cardiology department gave first live performance

in interventional cardiology.

There were a total of 11 centres,which were telecasting

cardiology surgeries. Out of 11,eight were national centres,

including PGIMER,and three were international

(USA,Italy and Germany). On Sunday,a live case performance was transmitted from PGIMER for the

Advanced Cardio Vascular Solutions Conference in Hyderabad.

It was in collaboration with Transcatheter Cardiovascular

Therapeutics (USA),an interventional

cardiology forum. From PGIMER,the main

interventional cardiologists were Dr S Reddy and Dr Shiv

Bagga,assisted by their resident

doctors.

“On Sunday,a team of doctors gave first live performance

from the operation theatre to hundreds of cardiologists

sitting in Hyderabad,”said Dr S Reddy. “The patient

was an elderly woman who refused CABG (bypass surgery).

The angioplasty was complex and was performed

using latest techniques of OCT (optical coherence tomography).”

He said that the case they dealt with was very complex

and adjudged as the most tough and best case for live

transmission.

The presentation was seen by more than 500 cardiologists

from all over the world. “The whole purpose of such

live case presentations is to educate and improve competence

and performance of leading cardiologists in the field of interventional cardiology,” Dr S Reddy added.

Dr Reddy and Dr Bagga were trained abroad for latest

technical skills.
