Mohit Mohindra, the son of veteran Congress leader Brahm Mohindra, Thursday took charge as president of the Youth Congress in Punjab. The 32-year-old had won the polls to the post held earlier this year. He replaces Brinder Singh Dhillon.
Mohit took charge of the PYC in the presence of senior party leaders including Indian Youth Congress national president Srinivas BV, Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of Opposition in Vidhan Sabha Partap Singh Bajwa.
After formally, taking charge, Mohit recounted his and his family’s long connection with the Congress.
“I served the party for eight years, contested two elections and it was my dream to work for party while following the protocol. I did not inherit politics. I inherited how to remain loyal to the party,” said Mohit in apparent reference to his father, a six time MLA.
“I want to assure the high command that we (PYC office bearers) will not seek (Assembly election) tickets. We will work hard for three and a half years and only after that, if you find us competent, do give us your blessings,” said Mohit who unsuccessfully contested the last year’s Vidhan Sabha polls from Patiala Rural, but lost to Dr Balbir Singh of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by a margin of 53474 votes.
Addressing the gathering, Srinivas BV said there is no place for people who do not want to work dedicatedly for the party. He said the Congress will provide its workers and leaders ample opportunities if they focus on serving selflessly.
Congratulating Mohindra and the other newly-appointed office-bearers of the PYCV, Warring emphasised on the importance of the three Ds — dedication, discipline and dialogue — in life.
“Everyone wants to become successful but we all must remember that there are no shortcuts to success. If you all really want to achieve success in life, imbibe these qualities and work hard to build a better future,” he said while praising Mohit for his dedication and commitment and ability to connect with youngsters.
Bajwa said there is no place for people without the “Congress pedigree” in the party. “The Congress is not just a political party, it is an emotion that runs in the blood. Anyone who is a part of the party that sacrificed several of its leaders for the nation must dedicate themselves wholeheartedly to preserve the value of the party and serve the nation and its people,” Bajwa said.
He added the Congress has always stood by the people and raised its voice to safeguard their Constitutional rights. The Congress is committed to the welfare of the people of Punjab and will not compromise on its principles, Bajwa said while recalling how he took over as PYC chief at the age of 25 year during turbulent times of extremism in state.
Bholath MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira advised the PYC leadership to pursue “one-point charter” of waging a fight against drugs and reach out to the families who had lost youth to the menace.
In the PYC polls, Mohit had cornered 2,40,600 votes out of total 4,51,550 polled. Lawyer by profession, Mohit was captain of the Punjab Under-15 cricket team that won Polly Umrigar Trophy for the year 2005-06. He also captained the Under-17 state team, which finished as runners up in the Vijay Merchant Trophy in 2007-08. He also represented Punjab in the Under-22 cricket team.
Mohit had started his political journey as secretary, Youth Congress in Patiala in 2016 and was made the PYC vice president in 2021.
