Mohali Phase 2: Sewer line collapses in green belt opposite market, residents fear accidents

Despite the Municipal Corporation spending crores of rupees every year on repairs, no permanent solution has been found. Officials admit that laying an entirely new system would require huge funds that the Municipal Corporation does not currently have.

The decades-old sewerage and drainage system in Mohali is gradually collapsing, causing frequent disruptions and hardships for residents. The lines, originally laid with brickwork when the city was established, have now started to sink under pressure as the city continues to expand.

Despite the Municipal Corporation spending crores of rupees every year on repairs, no permanent solution has been found. Officials admit that laying an entirely new system would require huge funds that the Municipal Corporation does not currently have.

Sources said the sewerage and drainage lines are quite old and made of bricks. Over time, these lines have begun to sink at several places across the city, causing serious inconvenience to the public. Recently, during heavy rain, a portion of the sewer line collapsed in the green belt area in front of the main market of Phase 2. Residents now fear that the sunken stretch may cause accidents while similar problems have also been reported from other parts of the city.

President of the Phase 2 market Nitesh Vij said, “We have been facing this problem for many days. Authorities should do something urgently to solve it.”

Dalbir Singh, a resident of Phase 2, said the crater created by the sewer line collapse can endanger lives. “Someone can fall into it at night,” he said.

However, Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu said, “New sewerage and drainage lines cannot be laid at this stage as the city is already fully developed. The Municipal Corporation is ensuring regular cleaning and carrying out repairs wherever needed.”

When contacted, Municipal Commissioner Parminder Pal Singh assured that the issue in Phase 2 is being addressed. “Immediate instructions have been issued to the officials concerned to begin repair work on the collapsed sewer line,” he said.
