In a key move to ensure safe drinking water for students, Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sonam Choudhary has directed the District Education Officer to conduct drinking-water sample tests in every government school across Mohali district.
The order was issued during a meeting of the District Water and Sanitation Mission, where Choudhary emphasised strict monitoring of water quality.
Choudhary also instructed departments to coordinate efforts under the Swachhata Hi Seva campaign, a joint initiative of the Government of India and the Punjab government. Departments were asked to follow Central guidelines to clean all community toilets and community sanitation complexes (CTCs).
Reviewing ongoing solid waste management projects, she urged officials to expedite pending work and ensure timely completion.
Highlighting the importance of rejuvenating rural water bodies, Choudhary stressed the “Thapar Model” for upgrading village ponds. “All village ponds should be upgraded following the Thapar Model to improve sanitation and water management,”she said.
A New Pond System developed by Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, Patiala, is a scientifically designed method to treat village wastewater through a series of engineered tanks and ponds. It typically includes a screening chamber, digestion well, skimming tank, stabilisation tank, and an oxidation or maturation pond.
Eco-friendly and low-maintenance, this sustainable system can be constructed with active community participation and supported by government funding programmes such as MGNREGA, making it an effective solution for rural wastewater management.
