Mohali Mayor Amarjeet Singh Jeeti Sidhu Friday announced that repairing and recarpeting of long-damaged city roads will begin after September 15 at a cost of Rs 20 crore, once mining and hot-mix plants resume post-monsoon.
He said the roads, covering 90% of the city, will be renewed within six weeks.
The Mayor confirmed approvals of Rs 11.92 crore for the repair work of A-roads, and Rs 8.68 crore for B-road and C-road, covering 90% of city roads.
He highlighted that the road from Kumbhra village, Sector 62 to Phase-11, Sector 65 (Balongi road to Baba White House stretch) is in the worst condition. “This road was taken over by GMADA (Greater Mohali Area Development Authority) one-and-a-half years ago, but neither widened nor repaired. Once widened and handed back, its upkeep will be done by the Municipal Corporation,” he said.
“Officials have been directed to inspect sites regularly. Any lapse will be the responsibility of the contractor and concerned officer,” he said, adding that the quality of roads will not be compromised.
Sidhu admitted that Mohali’s biggest challenge is its outdated “bricks sewerage system” often leading to road collapses.
“Replacing it will cost Rs 100 to 200 crore, and we have already written to the government for a grant.”
