An incident of road rage in Mohali on Tuesday claimed the life of a Punjab Roadways driver after a dispute over honking turned violent near Kurali.
The deceased, Jagjit Singh (36), a contractual driver posted at the Jalandhar Roadways Depot and a resident of Malowal Tongra village (Amritsar), had left early Tuesday morning for Chandigarh with his bus.
According to another Jalandhar Roadways employee Chanan Singh, Jagjit had started his trip to Chandigarh in the morning and was returning when the clash occurred.
As per eyewitness accounts, when the bus reached the traffic lights near Kurali, Jagjit honked to take a side. The Bolero driver ahead began hurling abuses. When Jagjit tried to confront him, the Bolero driver stepped out of his vehicle and attacked Jagjit with a rod, hitting him in the chest.
Jagjit collapsed on the spot. Locals rushed him to Civil Hospital, Kurali, where doctors provided first aid and referred him to a Mohali hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.
The victim is survived by his wife, a son, and a daughter, aged between 4 and 8 years.
“Jagjit was a sincere worker. No one could imagine that a minor honking issue would cost him his life,” Chanan added.
Following the incident, Punjab Roadways officials lodged a complaint with Kurali police. The police arrested the accused Bolero driver, who is a resident of Padiyala village near Kurali. The accused has been taken into custody, and an FIR is being registered against him, police said.
