Former Punjab finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal did not appear before the Vigilance Bureau Monday, citing medical reasons. The VB had called him to its Bathinda office to investigate a cheating and forgery case registered against him.
Badal’s advocate, Sukhdeep Singh Bhinder, appeared before the VG on his behalf and sought exemption from personal appearance for ten days because of back pain. Bhinder even submitted a medical certificate of Badal stating that he had been taking treatment from PGI Chandigarh and advised rest for seven days.
Bhinder even deposited Badal’s passport with the VB. Sources revealed that VB will consult with legal experts and get the medical certificate examined by a board of doctors.
On October 16, Badal got anticipatory bail from Punjab and Haryana High Court. A VB team in September searched Badal’s residence at his native Badal village in Sri Muktsar Sahib district after it had booked him and five others in connection with alleged irregularities in the purchase of a property in Bathinda.
The VB had launched an investigation into the matter based on BJP leader and former MLA Sarup Chand Singla’s 2021 complaint alleging irregularities in the purchase of the property at a prime location in Bathinda.
