The Punjab Police on Monday claimed to have cracked a blind murder case with the arrest of a man charged with ‘sacrificing’ his eight-year-old granddaughter.

The Punjab Police on Monday claimed to have cracked a blind murder case with the arrest of a man charged with ‘sacrificing’ his eight-year-old granddaughter. A self-styled tantrik on whose advice the crime was committed has also been arrested. The police said the crime was committed with the objective to become rich overnight.

A case of Manpreet Kaur, the eldest of five daughters of Gurdeep Singh,a resident of Ramgarh Shahpuria village, going missing was reported at the Boha police station in the district on November 2.

Later, the body of the girl was found floating in a well and a case of murder was registered.

The police said Manpreet was picked up by her grandfather Jagga Singh while she was asleep and taken to an uninhabited house of Mithu Singh, the tantrik. There the duo strangulated the victim before throwing her body into a well. “Before strangulating the girl, the accused inflicted an injury on her body with a sharp-edged weapon and paid obeisance at a place in the village with her blood to please a deity called Mata,” said Mansa SSP H S Mann.

The SSP said the police zeroed in on the duo after they came to know that Mithu Singh had earlier indulged in the practice of sacrificing animals.
