A local court has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for life for the murder of his wife’s lover who was found stoned to death in Behlolpur village near here in May last year. His wife, who was also accused of the crime, was acquitted in the case due to lack of evidence.
The convict in the case is Jagtar Singh, 32, a resident of Hassanpur in Ludhiana. He, along with his wife Shallu, 23, were arrested last year after the body of Shallu’s lover Jasbir Singh, a resident of Nurpur Bedi, was found in Behlolpur.
The prosecution said, residents of Behlolpur found Jasbir lying in a pool of blood near the Kajauli water supply pipeline on the morning of May 27, 2013. The victim had injuries on his head and face. The Sarpanch found a phone number in the pocket of the deceased and dialled the number to inform the person about the incident. He also called the police. The victim was then identified as Jasbir Singh, whose brother Sarabjit Singh reached the spot and told police that Jasbir had left home the previous day in the afternoon, after which his phone was switched off.
The body was shifted to the mortuary in the civil hospital and a case of murder registered at the Balongi police station. Two blood-soaked stones, some clothes stained with bloods and a bag with red bangles and other clothes were also found from near the spot. Sarabjit suspected that Jasbir was killed by Jagtar and his wife Shallu, as the latter was in a relationship with Jasbir prior to her marriage and had even eloped with her once, but had later returned home.
