Man gets 10-yr RI under NDPS Act

A Mohali court sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh for possession of illegal drugs.

A Mohali court sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) and imposed a penalty of Rs 1 lakh for possession of illegal drugs on Monday. Kuldeep Singh (31),a resident of Gulchapper village in Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh,will have to undergo an additional RI of six months if he fails to pay the fine.

Singh,a farmer,was held guilty by Additional Sessions Judge Dilbagh Singh Johal under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

The guilty was booked and nabbed by Mohali police in December 2008 at a police barricade near the Punjab State Education Board (PSEB) office when he was coming from Chandigarh with a juvenile. Around 500 grams of smack was recovered from the duo and a case registered in the Phase 8 police station.

“Drug abuse is increasing in this part of the country and young persons are being used by the drug peddlers to transport drugs,” said the judge.
