The Ludhiana Rural police demolished a building belonging to an alleged woman drug peddler in the district’s Narangwal village in a late-night action Thursday as part of their drive against drug peddlers and smugglers in the state.

The action came after the woman’s video went viral in which she was purportedly heard saying: “I will continue to sell drugs, no matter what. We aren’t new in this business… Do what you can.” She had said this while arguing with the village sarpanch Manjinder Singh who was asking her to stop selling drugs.

Ankur Gupta, Senior Superintendent of Police, Ludhiana Rural, said they also arrested the woman Kulbir Kaur, along with her husband Balwant Singh and their aide Tanveer Singh adding that the couple was booked in at least four cases of drug peddling under the NDPS Act.

“A part of the couple’s house, which they had built by encroaching panchayat land, has been razed. The couple was previously booked in three cases for drug peddling and a fourth one was registered today. Their property was funded from the money obtained from drug sales. All illegal properties belonging to drug peddlers, as well as those built with drug money will be demolished in coming days,” Gupta told The Indian Express.

Sarpanch Manjinder Singh said the viral video had come to the notice of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. “He (Mann) called me to ask what the matter was. When we explained that the woman and her family were constantly engaged in selling heroin, he had assured immediate action. The family has been selling drugs for a long time. They had even threatened to kill me when I had asked them to stop selling drugs.”

The Punjab Police have been razing the properties of alleged drug suppliers in their latest measure against drugs. On Tuesday, the Ludhiana city police said they demolished illegal constructions linked to two drug peddlers in and have identified 78 more such properties that will be razed.
