A man and his wife were arrested in Punjab’s Ludhiana on Wednesday for allegedly hurting, abusing and intimidating his 85-year-old mother after the assault was caught on CCTV and noticed by his sister, who is settled in Australia.

According to the police, the incident took place in the Mohalla Bank Colony of Raikot town.

The elderly woman, identified as Gurnam Kaur, lived with her son, Jasveer Singh, and daughter-in-law, Gurpreet Kaur. On April 1, Gurnam’s daughter, Harpreet Kaur, who lives in Australia, allegedly witnessed her mother being brutally assaulted by her brother. Harpreet allegedly discovered the assault through CCTV footage connected to her mobile phone.

The CCTV footage dated March 28 purportedly shows the woman, who is sitting on a cot, being slapped multiple times by her son. He is also purportedly seen trying to strangle his mother. When she nearly loses consciousness, the purported video shows him dragging her on the floor.

Disturbed by the sight, Harpreet forwarded the video to Gurpreet Singh alias Mintu, chairman of the NGO Manukhta Di Sewa. Gurpreet Singh and his team reached Gurnam’s house, rescued her, and admitted her to a hospital for treatment.

Amarjit Singh, Sub-Inspector and Station House Officer, Raikot city police station, said that after receiving a report from the hospital about the elderly woman’s injuries, the police recorded her statement. The victim revealed that she had been suffering abuse at the hands of her son and daughter-in-law for a long time, as per the FIR.

She said in her statement to the police that she was allegedly regularly assaulted by her son on her daughter-in-law’s instigation. On March 28 too, she alleged, her daughter-in-law had instigated her son to slap her, following which he allegedly hit her head on the wall several times and tried to strangle her.

Based on her complaint, the police arrested Jasveer and Gurpreet and registered a case under sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 296 (obscene acts and the utterance of obscene songs or words in public places), 351 (1) (criminal intimidation ), 351 (3) (criminal intimidation by treating to cause death or grievous hurt) and 3 (5) (criminal act is done by several persons in furtherance of the common intention of all) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
