The Ludhiana fast track special court Tuesday sentenced a 30-year old man to life imprisonment for raping an eight-year old girl in 2020. The court of additional sessions judge Amarjeet Singh also ordered that the convict will “remain incarcerated for remainder of his natural life or till his death” and that “he shall not be released on parole at least till he has spent 25 effective years in prison”.

The accused, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was living in Ludhiana when the incident took place. The FIR was registered on the complaint of the victim’s parents, also natives of UP, who said in their statement that they sell vegetables on a cart near their rented room. They said that on October 1, 2020, their 8-year old daughter went missing. While looking for her, they heard cries from the room of the accused, who also lived in the same area. When they went inside, they saw that the accused was raping her and their daughter was bleeding profusely.

Public prosecutor in the case BD Gupta said that 13 witnesses were examined and DNA tests were also conducted for scientific investigation. He further said that the court convicted the accused under sections 376-AB of IPC and 6 of POCSO Act. “He has been sentenced to life imprisonment under both sections and both sentences will run concurrently. As per the order, he won’t be entitled for parole before spending 25 years in prison,” said Gupta.
