In one corner of the site that houses buildings of the Le Corbusier Centre and the wildlife and forest department,a structure has stood the test of time. Built in the 1950s by Pierre Jeanneret and his team, the structure was built to experiment with the concept of building arcs without using concrete. The experiment was then put to practical use in the construction of cheap houses.

The building that houses the Le Corbusier Centre in Sector 19 was at one time the office of the creators of the city. It is while working here that the architects decided to experiment with building arcs.

Two structures of varying heights are present in the area. Between the arcs and the walls there is a slight gap to facilitate ventilation.

While one structure of a lower height was not used for any purpose, the other was used as a canteen for some time. Now,it is lying locked with most people not aware of its significance. “A small structure was built first and then another one, which was higher, was added to it. For some time,we used the building as a canteen,” said M N Sharma, first Indian Chief Architect of the city.

At present,a temporary canteen operates from outside the structure. In dire need of maintenance, one of the structures is surrounded by overgrowth of grass. Moreover, not a single sign is in place to provide information about the structures.

Former Principal of Chandigarh College of Architecture,Dr Rajneesh Wattas, confirmed that the design was used for building cheap houses.
