A liquor godown at Raipur Kalan village in Mani Majra was raided and locked by the Chandigarh Police and the excise department on Monday afternoon. About 11,000 crates of alcoholic drinks were also confiscated.
The warehouse had been leased on rent by Sharanjit Singh to a licensed liquor contractor,Naresh Garg. After not receiving the due rent for a few months,Singh filed a case against Garg in 2008 and did not allow him to remove the liquor from the godown when the contract ended. Later,Garg was arrested in a case under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in December 2011from Kochi in Kerla.
On getting secret information about the huge quantity of wine,a Special Technical Operation Cell (STOC) team of Chandigarh Police called a police party from Mauli Jagran police post and Excise Inspectors Yogeshwar sharma and Vijay Garg to the spot for further verification.
After inspection, the excise department wrote to the company offices to destroy the wine lying in the godown. Ranjit Singh Dhillon, the investigating officer, said,In case the owner of the godown objects to the company representative destroying the wine,we will take the help of local police to forcibly destroy the wine.
A DDR has been lodged in Mauli Jagran police station.
