A family from Yamuna Nagar alleged on Saturday that they had to discontinue the treatment of their newborn son at PGIs Advanced Paediatric Centre (APC) midway due to the unavailability of a ventilator for almost a week.
According to Surmukh Singh,grandfather of the ten-day-old boy,the newborn had developed pneumonia and severe infection following which the doctors at Yamuna Nagar referred him to PGI.
We came to PGI on June 6 and for a week,I kept the child alive with the help of an ambu bag to facilitate his breathing. The child needed to be shifted to a ventilator,but we were told that no ventilator was free and we had to be admitted in the ward, said Singh.
He also alleged that it was a tedious process to get a discharge from the hospital as the junior doctors asked them to wait for a senior doctor. I waited for an hour for the discharge after completing a series of formalities, Singh added. The family has now moved to a private hospital in the city,where the child has been kept on ventilator.
The spokesperson of PGI,Manju Wadwalkar,said: There is generally a lot of rush for ventilators at the hospital as the demand exceeds the availability manifold. We have to prioritise every case.
