Following the increase in water level of the Beas river, Captain Karnail Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Kapurthala, Thursday visited the area and engaged with the farmers of the Mand area of Kapurthala district.
The water level is increasing due to the release of water from the Pong Dam into the river.
The DC said that the Harike Pattan barrage, located at the confluence of the Sutlej and Beas rivers, had been opened to ensure that the water level in the Mand area remained under control.
He also visited the dhusi bandhs along the banks of the Beas in Kapurthala, Dhilwan and Sultanpur Lodhi areas to review the flood prevention arrangements.
Asserting that the situation was under control, the DC directed all departmental officials to remain alert and ensure necessary arrangements are in place. He emphasised that continuous monitoring of the water level in the Beas river is being carried out.
He inspected the strengthening of the dhusi embankment at Dera Hari Singh and the installation of stone studs to prevent erosion along certain sections of the river, including Lakh Verhiyaan in Sultanpur Lodhi and Mand Baupur.
Furthermore, the Goindwal Sahib Bridge over the Beas river was examined to identify and remove any potential obstructions to the water flow.
The DC instructed the officials to expedite the work of reinforcing weak spots identified on the dhusi bandh as part of the flood prevention arrangements.
Additionally, the irrigation department was directed to provide a daily report on the release of water from the Pong Dam and the water flow in the river.
