Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Jai Ram Thakur said on Wednesday that the ruling Congress government’s celebration of three years in office is “hard to digest” as it’s taking place at a time when the state is still battling a disaster and the Disaster Management Act is in force.
“Even senior Congress leaders do not seem to understand what exactly the government is celebrating. The Congress government is completing three years in office, but has nothing to showcase, ” the former chief minister said. “The state is battling a disaster, and the Disaster Management Act is currently in force in Himachal Pradesh. The very law Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is citing to justify the postponement of the panchayat elections.”
“Despite such adverse circumstances, I fail to understand why the government feels the need to celebrate three years in office,” Thakur said. “The Sukhu government, which came to power promising system change, cannot resist holding celebrations.”
Addressing a press conference, Jai Ram said, “The state treasury has halted payments above Rs 10,000, salaries and pensions are being delayed, medical reimbursements, especially for senior citizens, are not being processed, youths are not getting employment, and outsourced staff are being removed. Over 15,000 people have lost their jobs. Roads have become riddled with potholes, and the condition of basic facilities in rural areas is miserable. Yet the government is busy preparing for celebrations.”
Fielding questions on the Bihar Assembly elections, the LoP said the Bihar verdict sent a clear message to the Congress, which would be facing even worse in Himachal. “The Congress will be nowhere to be seen in the next Himachal Assembly election. The people of the state will pack the Congress’s bag, which came to power on fake guarantees,” he said.
