Deputing as many as 40 teachers from Punjab, the UT Department of Education,Chandigarh issued relieving letters to 32 Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) working on contract basis in different government schools here today.
All 32 teachers, along with members of educational employees union held a protest against the departments move outside the office of District Education Officer (DEO),Chanchal Singh.
Gurjit Kaur, who was working as a TGT in social science in Goverment Model Middle School,Khuda Jassu said,These relieving letters have been given to us without prior intimation. This is too sudden and unfair.
Some of these teachers, who sought their relocation to other schools today, were told that due to lack of vacancies in many of the schools the department cannot place them anywhere for now. Swaran Singh,President of employees union said,There is hardly any logic in deputing teachers from Punjab when the DEO himself is telling the TGTs that there is shortage in vacancies in the Chandigarh schools. Meanwhile, the DEO asserted that these TGTs have not been terminated. DEO Chanchal Singh said,We have just issued relieving letters to the TGTs as we want more qualified teachers to take over. But that does not mean that we have terminated the TGTs. These are normal transfers. We wanted to reshuffle their locations. Swaran Singh said,The departments move clearly indicates its bias towards some of the teachers who have not been deputed anywhere in the last 10 years. In accordance with the UT guidelines, all teachers should be deputed within 5 years of service at one place.
Of the 32 TGTs,22 teach social science while 10 teach Punjabi in different schools including GMSSS Manimajra,Sector 19,29,56,Karsan and Government Model Middle School in Khuda Jassu.
