At least one person was injured as gunshots were fired during Punjab bandh call in Moga district, Wednesday.
Police said that some protesters were getting shops shut in Kot Ise Khan division of Moga when a shopkeeper opened fire at a protester. DSP Ravinder Singh said that there was a heated argument when protesters reached the cellphone shop owned by Gurpreet Sigh alias Gora, an ex-serviceman.
“Among the protesters was also Balwant Singh, a Nihang Singh, who tried to convince Gora to shut his shop. Soon, the ex-serviceman took out his 32 bore licenced revolver and opened fire injuring Balwant Singh,” said the DSP, adding that the ex-serviceman was arrested.
Police registered an FIR on the complaint of Sandeep Singh, son of Balwant Singh who said in his statement that his father was a sewadar at gurdwara Sahib Nihang Chhawni. He added that his father was a part of peaceful protest march against violence and sexual abuse of women in Manipur. He added that when his father asked Gora to shut his shop and participate in bandh call, the latter took out his weapon and opened fire injuring his father.
