A student hailing from Punjab was allegedly shot dead while waiting at a bus stop in Canada’s Hamilton on Thursday. The police said she was not the intended target of the assailants.
According to Hamilton police, the shooting occurred around 7.30 pm while the victim, identified as Harsimrat Randhawa, 21, a student of Mohawk College, was waiting for public transport to get to her workplace. She was found with a gunshot wound to her chest and died at a hospital later.
Authorities said bullets also struck the back window of a nearby residence where people were watching television. The occupants of the house, however, reported no injuries.
An investigation is underway and the police are yet to make an arrest. They have appealed to the public for any information or video footage that may help identify the suspects.
The shooting has raised concerns in the local community and among international students about public safety and violence.
The Consulate General of India in Toronto said in a post on X Friday, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Indian student Harsimrat Randhawa in Hamilton, Ontario.” The official added, “As per local police, she was an innocent victim, fatally struck by a stray bullet during a shooting incident involving two vehicles. A homicide investigation is currently underway. We are in close contact with her family and are extending all necessary assistance. Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time.”
In a statement to CBC News on Friday, Mohawk College said it was “deeply saddened” to learn of Randhawa’s death. “Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time. As a member of the Mohawk College community, we know this loss is being felt by many and we will do everything we can to support Harsimrat’s friends, family and the broader college community.”
