Cricket fever has hit Chandigarh as India are set to take on Australia in the ICC Men’s World Cup final in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Shopkeepers at Sector 17 have collaborated and collected around Rs 90,000 to put up a large screen for a public screening of the game at the central plaza.

Neeraj Bagga, president of the Chandigarh Business Council, sector 17, told The Indian Express, “This is that time of the season when even the one who is not a cricket fan would definitely want to see the match, because, after all, it is the World cup final and our team is right there playing. We want to cheer for our country and what can be a better place than the plaza.” He said those who come to watch the match would be given a welcome drink, like a hot coffee.

The shopkeepers said the Chandigarh Business Council spent around Rs 12 lakh to deck up the plaza with lights. A 150-foot chip-based light tunnel and flying umbrellas are the major attractions. There are about 200 shopkeepers and about 40 per cent of them have contributed to illuminating the plaza.

Earlier this Diwali, Sector 17 remained the showstopper in Chandigarh with its plush lighting across the plaza.
