Earlier, Jalandhar MLA Sushil Rinku had also joined AAP and was also given the ticket to contest the bypoll. Chaudhary Surinder Singh is the nephew of Chaudhary Santokh Singh, whose death prompted the Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday during an election rally in Kartarpur formally welcomed Chaudhary Surinder Singh into the Aam Aadmi Party.

Mann said that he (Chaudhary Surinder Singh) and his family have been in the political field and social service for generations. “He is a true volunteer,” he said.

He added that AAP is a party of crores of people and crores of people will join this party to take our country forward. Right now the AAP has its government in only two states, five MLAs in Gujarat, two in Goa and 10 Rajya Sabha MPs but soon we will reach 130 crore people in our country.

While thanking the CM, Chaudhary Surinder Singh said that the future of Punjab is safe only in the hands of Bhagwant Mann. He said that Mann and party supremo Arvind Kejriwal have fulfilled the promises made during the assembly elections and that has impressed the people of Punjab.

Chaudhary Surinder is the son of late Congress minister and five- time MLA Chaudhary Jagjit Singh. Chaudhary Surinder’s family has been associated with Congress for decades as his grandfather, Master Gurbanta Singh, was 7- a time MLA and his uncle Santokh Chaudhary was two times MP and former Cong MLA and minister. Now he will campaign against his own Aunt and Congress candidate Karamjit Kaur, wife of late Santokh Chaudhary.
