House passes resolution on foodgrain storage

The Punjab Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution on problems being faced pertaining to the storage of foodgrains in the state

The Punjab Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a resolution on problems being faced pertaining to the storage of foodgrains in the state. The resolution requests the state government to take up the issue of storage of foodgrains and its movement with the Centre.

Earlier, the Congress and SAD-BJP levelled allegations blaming each other for the lack of space for storing foodgrains and the situation that was being faced. Punjab faces a shortage of storing around 70 lakh tonne of foodgrains.

Punjab Food and Civil Supplies Minister Adesh Partap Singh Kairon said in 2007-08 several letters were written to the Centre about the lack of space for storing foodgrains. “The problem had not cropped up suddenly, rather it kept increasing over the years,” Kairon said.

He said while the Congress was in power,no demands to increase the storage capacity were sent to the Centre. He also said no warehouse was constructed during the tenure of the Congress.

Taking part in the discussion,SAD MLA Deep Malhotra said that food processing industry should be set up in the state.
