The Himachal Pradesh Police Friday arrested the Ram Kumar Bindal, the elder brother of state BJP chief and a practitioner of traditional medicine, after he was booked for allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman on the pretext of a medical examination at his clinic in Solan, a senior officer said. Dr Rajeev Bindal, the state BJP chief, said the police have fallen to their “lowest standard” and termed the case as “politically motivated mischievous act”.

“The woman, in her complaint, said that she had been suffering from an ailment for a long time and went to consult ‘Vaid’ Ram Kumar on October 7 at his clinic in Solan for Ayurvedic treatment,” the SP said.

The woman, in her complaint, further said that at the clinic, she told Ram Kumar about her sexual health related issue. She said Ram Kumar enquired about the medical condition in detail and assured that he would cure her. “He even showed a related book as proof of his expertise,” she said in her complaint.

The police, quoting the complaint said, that the woman alleged that Ram Kumar started examining her private parts despite her refusing consent. She further alleged that she was raped digitally on the pretext of the medical examination and somehow pushed the accused and managed to run out, police said.

After receiving the complaint, police started preliminary investigations, they said.

“Before arresting the accused, we recorded the statement of the woman before a local magistrate and also collected relevant forensic evidence from the scene of crime. We found that the accused had torn the page of the register at his clinic where the antecedents of the victim were noted on October 7,” SP Singh told The Indian Express.

Rajeev Bindal, meanwhile said, “The state police have fallen to their lowest standard. My brother is 81-years old and is known in the entire region for his social work. He is an Ayurvedic practitioner and people not only from Himachal but also from neighboring states come to him for treatment. His grandson is an IPS officer. I fail to understand how, based on some allegations levelled by a woman, police arrested him in a haste”.

Himachal BJP media cell convener Karan Nanda said Ram Kumar “has contributed a lot in strengthening the sanatan dharma”. “The case seems to be a politically motivated mischievous act,” he said.
