Torrential rain since Wednesday morning triggered the collapse of a newly built road near the Patiala Ki Rao seasonal stream at Nayagaon in Chandigarh Wednesday. The road quickly gave way to the stream’s overflowing waters, stranding commuters and forcing urgent diversions through narrow village routes.
“The road gave way around 11 in the morning. It was built only recently. Still, it could not withstand today’s rain. This shows poor planning and execution,” said Vijay Kumar, a resident and eyewitness.
The disrupted route, linking Nayagaon to Chandigarh, is vital to daily commuters. In response, emergency services, local police, and residents worked to manage traffic and avert accidents. While no injuries have been reported, the collapse has prompted serious questions over construction standards and planning.
Earlier in August, a protracted infrastructure project on Nada Road in Nayagaon—intended to lay sewerage pipes and pave tiles—remained incomplete. Abandoned mid-construction, the road turned into a muddy, slippery stretch after repeated rains, hampering pedestrian access and business activity.
“The surface has deteriorated further… The road is impossible to cross,” lamented Roshan, a shopkeeper.
Across the wider region, heavy rain battered Zirakpur, Nayagaon, and Mullanpur, rendering roads hazardous—particularly for two-wheelers—due to flooded streets, slush, hidden potholes, and stalled drainage. Mud and open trenches from unfinished works added to the danger. In response to public pressure, municipal crews deployed bulldozers to clear debris—but residents demand long-term solutions.
Chandigarh logged 308.5 mm rainfall in August, representing an 8 per cent surplus over the 284.8 mm average for the month. This pushed the monsoon rainfall so far to 836.6 mm, nearing the full-season norm of 845 mm—even with September pending. In contrast, July saw a rainfall deficit—just 184.8 mm, about 32 per cent below normal.
