Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar a ‘martyr’, was instructed to open fire on farmers but refused: Charanjit Singh Channi

Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi said IPS officer Y Puran Kumar’s death was the result of the ‘Manuwadi mindset propagated by the RSS-BJP’.

Punjab MP and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Saturday visited the residence of the late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar and his wife, IAS Amneet P Kumar, in Chandigarh and said that he “did not die by suicide but was martyred for standing up for Dalits and the poor”.

Congress MP Channi said that during the farmers’ protest in Haryana, when Kumar was posted in the state, he was allegedly instructed to open fire and take strict action against the agitating farmers. “He refused to adhere to such directions. That was his integrity. Y Puran Kumar did not commit suicide; he is a martyr who stood up for justice and the downtrodden,” Channi said.

Saying that even an ADGP-rank officer in India is unable to get justice today, Channi said, “This is the result of the Manuwadi mindset propagated by the RSS-BJP, which has now spread across the country. It is this mindset that forced Kumar to take the extreme step.”

Highlighting Kumar’s commitment to equality, Channi said that he had been a strong voice within his department, fighting for the rights and promotions of Dalit and reserved category officers. “He often questioned why officers from the reserved category were being denied their due posts as SHOs and DSPs. He was carrying forward the ideology of Dr B R Ambedkar,” Channi added.

Expressing anguish over the handling of the case, Channi said that days after Kumar’s death, neither has justice been delivered nor has his body been treated with the dignity it deserves. “His body is being disrespected, and those responsible for his death are being protected,” Channi alleged.

He demanded that all those who pressured or instigated Kumar to end his life be booked, arrested, and put behind bars. When informed that SP Narender Bijarniya—one of the officers allegedly accused in the case—had been transferred from Rohtak, Channi dismissed it as a routine move. “Transfers are administrative formalities, not punishments,” he remarked.

“Whenever there is a case, an FIR is registered, accused are named, and arrests are made. But in this case, nothing of that sort has happened. This has become routine under the BJP’s rule. We will not remain silent,” Channi said firmly.

He reiterated that the Congress and other parties stand united with the family of Kumar, who, according to him, “laid down his life fighting for the oppressed”.

Kumar, a 2001-batch IPS officer, was found dead with a gunshot wound at his residence on Tuesday. He had left behind a note naming several senior police officers, detailing the alleged “mental harassment” and humiliation he faced over the last few years. His wife, Amneet P Kumar, is a senior IAS officer serving as secretary, Haryana government, currently.
