A day after the arrest of senior IAS officer Vijay Singh Dahiya in a corruption case, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of Haryana on Wednesday nabbed a second IAS of the state, Jaibir Singh Arya, in a bribery case.
According to details provided by the government officials, a middleman was arrested in the case while accepting the bribe of Rs 3 lakh, allegedly on behalf of Arya. A case in this regard was lodged on Wednesday, with both the arrested accused to be produced in court on Thursday
Arya, the managing director of Haryana State Warehousing Corporation, has been arrested under charges of seeking bribe for sanctioning a transfer. An official, in the know-how of the case, said that the money was sought for posting of an officer of the corporation as divisional manager in Kurukshetra. The money was to be delivered at a Panchkula shop.
Arya’s profile on a social media website describes him as having spent 25 years working for the government of Haryana and the Election Commission of India in various capacities, including an assignment as international observer for Sri Lanka’s Parliament-ary elections of 2015. Jaibir Singh Arya is among those 38 state civil services (HCS) officers who were elevated to the IAS cadre in 2019.
A second official, privy to the developments of the case, told The Indian Express on Wednesday, “As soon as an alleged middleman of Arya accepted the bribe money of Rs 3 lakh, the ACB sleuths arrested him. After questioning the tout, the team landed at the office of Arya at Panchkula at 6 pm and placed him under arrest as well.”
The official said, “The arrest of the IAS officer was not merely based on the statement of the tout. The ACB was following the case after having received a complaint in this case earlier. The bureau already has other evidence, including some recordings.”
He added that another official of the Haryana State Warehousing Corporation has been booked in the same case, but has not yet been arrested.
