A day after Haryana’s ruling BJP made clear that Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini would be its chief ministerial face for the Assembly elections due in October, Congress state in-charge Deepak Babaria indicated on Sunday that the party might not project a chief ministerial face for the polls.

Addressing a press conference, Babaria said the tradition in the Congress for the past 70 years had been that newly elected MLAs take a call on who should be the chief minister. He also said that “99.99 per cent of the time, there is a precedent that they (MLAs) give powers to the Congress president (to decide the CM) and a decision takes place as per the wish of the legislators”.

“Whether we go for a (CM) face or not is a major political decision. There is a confidential issue too and I would not like to go into public debate,” he added.

While referring to last years’ Assembly polls in a few states, Babaria said there were five chief ministerial candidates for the Congress in one state, but none of them was declared as such. Still, he said, “the Congress won the elections there with a landslide majority”. “In Haryana too, the Congress is going to form the government with a landslide majority,” he added.

On the other hand, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Saturday that the BJP would contest the Assembly elections under the leadership of Nayab Singh Saini and that the 54-year-old leader would be the next chief minister (if the party was voted to power).

Meanwhile, Babaria said the Congress organisation at the district and block levels would be formed soon. “I am very hopeful it will take place next week. The AICC general secretary has also planned a special meeting for that, which is likely to take place in 2-4 days,” he added.

Babaria said the party would prepare its manifesto for the Assembly polls after holding dialogue with different sections of society. Congress manifesto committee chairperson Geeta Bhukkal said that 17-18 sub-committees had been formed to hold such dialogue.
