Minister Mundian’s gunman ‘shoots self’ at neighbour’s house; FIR registered

Jyoti Yadav, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Khanna, said Gurkirat Singh was a native of Rampur village, and was posted with the Ludhiana police commissionerate.

“Prima facie, the constable reached the house of the woman and asked for her number from her mother, which she denied. Following this, he shot himself with his own weapon,” said Yadav.

However, according to the family of the deceased, the woman and her family used to harass Gurkirat and also extorted money from him on several occasions.

Inspector Akash Dutt, Station House Officer (SHO), Doraha police station, said that an FIR has been registered on the statement of the Gurkirat’s family for abetment to suicide against the woman, her mother, and brother.

“According to Gurkirat’s family, the woman’s family used to harass him and even extort money from him. We have booked the woman, her brother, and her mother under Section 108 of BNS [Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita]. Further probe is on,” said Dutt.

According to the FIR registered at Doraha police station, Daljit Kaur, mother of the deceased constable, in her statement to the police said that Gurkirat was having an affair since 2009 with the woman who also belongs to the same village. She added that both families knew that they were in love and wanted to marry. However, around five years ago, the woman’s mother got her married to someone else without informing Gurkirat. The mother further alleged that even after marriage, the woman used to call Gurkirat and take money from him and give it to her mother. However, Gurkirat went into depression. She further added that the woman and her mother used to harass Gurkirat by frequently calling him to their house where the mother would extort money.

She further added that on Sunday too, the woman’s mother had called Gurkirat to her house and after few hours, she got to know that her son had shot himself at their place. She added that she believes that her son was forced to take the extreme step because of harassment by the woman, her mother, and latter’s son.
