Guru Nanak Dev University vice chancellor (V-C) Dr Karamjeet Singh Monday appeared at the Akal Takht in Amritsar, the chief centre of religious authority of Sikhism, to present his explanation following complaints about his briefing to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat at an event last month.

The controversial interaction took place at ‘Gyan Sabha – Education for Viksit Bharat’, an event organised by RSS-linked Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas and Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at the B N Bahadur Institute of Management Sciences (BNBIMS) in Mysuru’s Manasagangotri on July 28.

In a purported video from the event, Dr Singh can be seen rising from his seat in the audience and informing the RSS chief about initiatives at the university, including the introduction of a compulsory PhD course on ‘Bharatiya parampara’ (Indian tradition) and the establishment of a Sikh chair aimed at studying the connections between the Rigveda and the teachings of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev.

Sharing the video, Punjab Congress MLA Pargat Singh alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had already displayed its alignment with right-wing policies by implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) in the state.

According to the university, the V-C attended a programme organised by Amrita University, Kochi, which brought together V-Cs from various institutions. The purpose of the gathering was to strengthen academic collaboration and share information about initiatives being undertaken at their respective universities, it said.

In an official statement Monday, the Akal Takht secretariat said, “In recent days, complaints were received at Sri Akal Takht Sahib against Guru Nanak Dev University vice chancellor Dr Karamjeet Singh for expressing views against Gurmat philosophy during a programme in South India. In this matter, as per the directions of the acting jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargarj, the vice chancellor was summoned to appear in person and present his side.”

“Today, Dr Karamjeet Singh met Jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargarj, where he presented his explanation both personally and in writing. This matter will be considered in the upcoming meeting of the five Singh Sahiban, where a decision will be taken,” it added.
