Former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda Sunday reached Sirsa and Fatehabad, and visited flood-affected areas to listen to the problems of the people.
Hooda said: “The floods have completely ruined crops in the fields by affecting farmers and farm workers. I would raise their problems in the Assembly. The government should give compensation of Rs 40,000 per acre to the farmers with immediate effect.”
The former CM said the damage done to houses and shops should be compensated by the government. He described the amount given to the families of the deceased as insufficient and said that it should be increased from current Rs 4 lakh to Rs 20 lakh.
“By entangling the flood-affected people in the web of the portal, the government is rubbing salt on their wounds. It has often been seen that whenever the government wants to shirk its responsibility, it takes the guise of the portal. This time too this seems to be happening. The government should understand the condition of the people. The public needs compensation, not the portal,” Hooda stated.
The Leader of Opposition said that the state government should demand a relief package from the Centre like the Congress government of Himachal Pradesh.
In Sirsa, Hooda said: “There has not been much rain in this area and floods have happened because of heavy rain upstream. It takes about a week for the water to reach here. Had the BJP-JJP government taken timely steps for rescue, the flood situation would not have arisen in the area.”
“But the government neither strengthened the embankment nor desilted Ghaggar river. Neither the drains were cleaned nor the Ottu lake in Sirsa district was excavated by the government. The excavation of this lake was to be done in four phases. During the Congress tenure, two phases of excavation had been completed, but in the past nine years this government has done nothing,” alleged Hooda.
He said that the state government should also pay attention to the condition of the roads, which have been badly damaged by the rain and floods.
