On a day Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda said marriage within the same gotra was not appropriate and that khap panchayats work like social organisations,a married couple from Leda Khas village in Yamunanagar district alleged social boycott and threat to life, all because they are from the same village.

On May 27,Mahabir and Ritu got married in an Arya Samaj Mandir in Ladwa, against the wishes of their families and the village panchayat. Last week, the village panchayat held a meeting and issued directions that they should not be allowed to enter the village and their families should be boycotted socially. As a result,Mahabir and Ritu were refused shelter not only by their relatives but also others in the village whom they approached for taking up accommodation on rent.

Alleging that they faced threat to life,Mahabir approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court for police protection. A senior police officer said that they were given police protection on the direction of the court.
