US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, along with his wife Amy Wakeland and a family member, paid obeisance at Sri Harmandir Sahib (the Golden Temple) here on Monday.

Garcetti visited Langar Sri Guru Ramdas Ji while doing “parikrama” (circumambulation) and performed “sewa” (voluntary service). While offering prayers at the temple, the US ambassador was offered a garland of flowers and “patasha prasad”.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami honoured Garcetti and his family members and presented them a golden model of Sachkhand Sri Harmandar Sahib, books and shawls at the information centre of Sri Darbar Sahib.

According to SGPC, in a meeting with the US ambassador, Dhami urged Garcetti to start direct flights from the US to Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar for the benefit the Sikh and Punjabi diaspora in the US. Dhami said the US ambassador was urged to make special efforts to start the direct flights, which will also help the Sikh and Punjabi community avoid the expense and hassle of coming to Punjab from New Delhi. To this, the US ambassador responded positively to take up the matter.

In the visitors’ book, Garcetti wrote, “There are a few places in the world that are truly sacred – this Golden Temple is right there at the top of that list. You feel not only the holiness of this place but how the generous service of the people define not only the world as it is but as it can be. May the deep friendships between the United States and Sikhism always bring peace to our world. With deep respect and friendships.”

While talking with Dhami, the US ambassador also said that there are a large number of Sikhs living in his home state of California with whom he has a good relationship.
