Former national boxing coach dies at 72

Former national boxing coach Balkar Singh passed away due to a long illness at a private hospital on Wednesday.

The 72-year-old retired from Sports Authority of India (SAI) in 2005. He was treasurer of Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) in Chandigarh. His younger brother, DSP Charanjeet Singh Virk, said Balkar was suffering with liver cancer for the last many years. He said Balkar was hospitalised for last 10 days.

“Balkar Singh made marvellous contributions for the development of boxing in Chandigarh for more than four decades. He organised more than 25 all India/ international/ zonal boxing championships. It is an irreparable loss to boxing family. May God grant strength to his family to bear this irreparable loss. May his pious soul rest in peace,” a statement from ABA said.
