Talks between Centre and farmers inconclusive, next round on Feb 22

A much-awaited meeting between a central team led by Union Minister Pralhad Joshi and farmers’ representatives to discuss their various demands, including a legal guarantee for MSP on crops, remained inconclusive in Chandigarh Friday with both parties agreeing to meet again on February 22.

Confusion, however, prevailed on the venue with Joshi telling reporters that they will meet “here” even as farmer leaders demanded that the next meeting be called in Delhi.

This was the fifth round of talks between Centre and 28 farmer leaders, and the first during the third term of the BJP-led NDA government, and comes exactly a year after the protests at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana began in February 2024.

The previous meetings — on February 8, 12, 15 and 18 last year — had remained inconclusive.

After the three-hour long meeting, Joshi said the Union Budget has kept a provision on procuring three pulses on MSP in the current fiscal under the ‘atma nirbhar’ programme. He said they have appealed to Jagjit Singh Dallewal to call off his hunger strike.
