EWS students suffer as pvt schools deny admission

A committee constituted by Director,Public Instructions Upkar Singh, six months ago to look into the issue of implementing the Right To Education Act,has not yet passed a mandate to reimburse the amount which was incurred on the Economically Weaker Section since 2010.

A committee constituted by Director,Public Instructions (Schools) Upkar Singh, six months ago to look into the issue of implementing the Right To Education (RTE) Act,has not yet passed a mandate to reimburse the amount which was incurred on the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) since 2010.

While the private schools await the clearance of the bills from the Education department, the authorities claim that they took up the issue of reimbursement with the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) but have not received any reply till date.

H S Mamik, president of Independent Schools Association (ISA) said,“All the private schools are awaiting reimbursement bills worth Rs 1.5 crore and this is the main reason why more than 200 EWS seats are still lying vacant. Some of the private schools are not ready to give admission to the economically poor students fearing they will not be reimbursed.”

“The schools were promised reimbursement of 10 per cent of the fees but none of the schools have received any money yet,” Mamik added.

Voicing the same concern, administrator at St Kabir Public School G S Bakshi said,“We are strictly not offering any admissions to the EWS students as our bills worth Rs 15-20 lakh are already pending. We’ll be more than happy to admit students the economically weaker section but only after the Education department clears our pending bills for the last two years.”

All the private schools have submitted the required information regarding the total number of RTE seats and also the number of seats lying vacant, but the Education department is yet to give in writing the details regarding the pending bills.
