‘Ensure ‘Emergency’ is not released in Punjab’: SGPC chief urges CM Bhagwant Mann to ban Kangana Ranaut film

If Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency is screened in Punjab, it will ‘evoke anger and protests within the Sikh community', SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami has warned CM Bhagwant Mann.

A day before Kangana Ranaut-starrer Emergency is set to be released across the country, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Thursday demanded that Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ban its screening in the state.

In a letter to Mann, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami said the movie was a “calculated attempt to distort history and harm Sikh sentiments” and warned that releasing it could provoke outrage within the Sikh community.

BJP MP’s movie depicts the 1984 attacks on the sacred Sikh shrines, including Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), Sri Akal Takht Sahib, and other holy sites, along with the Sikh genocide and ethnic cleansing, in a way that suppresses the truth and works under an anti-Sikh agenda to spread hatred against the community. Moreover, the film also maligns the character of the Sikh martyr Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale,” the letter reads.

The SGPC has claimed that the film, directed by Ranaut, portrays the Sikh community in a defamatory manner and promotes an anti-Sikh agenda.

“The SGPC has already raised objections to the film with Punjab’s Chief Secretary but expressed disappointment over the government’s lack of action. The SGPC has also sent representations to all Deputy Commissioners in Punjab, urging them to prevent the movie’s screening,” the letter further stated.

“If the film releases on January 17, 2025, it will naturally evoke anger and protests within the Sikh community. The Punjab government must take responsibility to ensure the movie is not released in the state. Otherwise, the SGPC will be compelled to launch strong protests across Punjab,” it added.

Emergency is directed and co-produced by BJP MP Ranaut who also plays the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the film. The film’s release was delayed after the Central Board of Film Certification sought that several cuts be made in the movie after Sikh groups raised concerns over the portrayal of the community.
