The Punjab and Haryana High Court has taken suo motu cognizance of a news report regarding the Border Security Force (BSF) presenting a list of 75 individuals suspected of involvement in drug trafficking in Punjab. Acting Chief Justice Ritu Bahri and Justice Aman Chaudhary, constituting the division bench, initiated this action.

The High Court has issued notices to the States of Punjab and Haryana, requesting a status report detailing the measures undertaken to address this matter. Additionally, the National Crime Bureau (NCB) has been directed to submit a report outlining the number of individuals affected by drug addiction in both states. The court seeks suggestions on preventive measures to educate those not yet addicted about the drug menace and ways to deter them from falling prey to drug abuse, considering the alarming quantity of narcotics recovered in Punjab.

The bench’s suo motu action was prompted by a news article published in a daily, which highlighted the BSF’s apprehensions regarding drug smuggling and the proposed preventive detention of alleged smugglers. The article also mentioned significant seizures of narcotics, rifles, and pistols in 2023, with 755 kgs of narcotics being intercepted at the Indian border, transported via drones.

The High Court emphasized the gravity of these developments in its order, urging comprehensive actions to curb drug trafficking and address the burgeoning drug addiction crisis in the region.
