DPI Randhawa held in graft case

Director Public Instructions (DPI) Elementary Sadhu Singh Randhawa was on Thursday arrested by Sangrur police in a corruption case and currency including US and Canadian dollars was recovered from his residence.

Randhawa is alleged to have connived with Unemployed Elementary Teachers Training (ETT) teacher’s union president Jagtar Singh Jhabbar to strike a deal to select as many as 50 candidates at a rate of Rs 2. 25 lakh each in the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) conducted on July 3.

Police said Jhabbar,who was arrested in the scam recently,spilled the beans and disclosed that huge sums of money had been extracted from 31 candidates after the deal was struck with Randhawa.

Police have registered a case under Prevention of Corruption Act against Randhawa.

A police team headed by Sangrur special branch police DSP Mukhtiar Singh raided the Sector 27 residence of Randhawa and recovered $1,520 and Canadian $100,besides Rs 4.29 lakh in Indian currency. Randhawa was taken into custody by the raiding police party.

Randhawa was also booked under Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act at Dialpura police station after a separate police party headed by DSP Jaskiranjit Singh raided his native house in Kothe Guru Ke village in Bathinda district and recovered 150 grams of opium.

With the arrest of Randhawa,the number of persons arrested in TET scam has gone up to five.

Police had earlier arrested Pawan Kumar,Varinder Singh and Harpreet Singh in the scam,besides Jhabbar.

Police claim to have recovered nearly Rs 57 lakh in the scam,with the maximum amount of about Rs 40.50 lakh recovered from accused Pawan Kumar,a resident of officers colony in Sangrur,alone.

Sources said a close aide of Education Minister Sewa Singh Sekhwan might also be involved in the scam.
