Leaders from Punjab Congress on Monday met the party’s high command in Delhi on the issue of extending support to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in Rajya Sabha to oppose the Centre’s ordinance to create a National Capital Civil Service Authority.
The ordinance, which would eventually be brought to the Parliament as Bill, will give Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor the final say on transfers and postings of civil servants instead of the state government.
After meeting All India Congress Committee president Mallikarjun Kharge, AICC leaders Rahul Gandhi and K C Venugopal, Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring said the ball was now in the high command’s court to decide whether to support or oppose the ordinance.
“It is between the party high command and us. We went and told them our reservations, and they will take a decision. The decision will be conveyed soon. I cannot share anything else on this,” said Warring.
Former PPCC chief Navjot Singh Sidhu said, “My opinion was in a closed door (meeting). My opinion was on the federal structure. I walk on the path of truth. I have my moral values. If something goes on inside a closed door, how can I relay it?”
Harish Chaudhary, Punjab affairs incharge, said it was an internal meeting. “We used our right to talk to the party high command. We have told the high command. This was an internal meeting. We will fight,” he said.
The meeting was held after the leader of Opposition in Punjab, Partap Bajwa, had urged the high command to consult Punjab Congress leaders before supporting the AAP as it had allegedly unleashed a witch-hunt against Congress leaders.
Bajwa had tweeted, “.@AamAadmiParty & @ArvindKejriwal deserve no support or sympathy from @INCIndia. @AAPPunjab govt has launched ruthless witch-hunt against @INCPunjab leaders and workers and has made their lives hell by misusing the police and investigation agencies.”
He had added, “I appeal to INC high command to consult the leadership of Punjab, HP, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Gujarat & Karnataka before even considering helping AAP. It was instrumental in giving a political edge to BJP in these states. AAP is the B team of BJP and they are two sides of the same coin. Let’s not protect a wolf in the sheep’s clothing.”
